“Hey, Mr. Matthews?” Philip, a quiet boy in Brandon’s cabin, interjected Brandon’s thoughts during dinner on Wednesday night. There was a bonfire happening after this and, as with most of the events at camp so far, the kids were pumped. “What’s up, Philip?”

“Is Miss Rogers your girlfriend?”

Brandon almost spewed the orange juice he had just sipped out of his mouth. He was expecting the boy to ask about the bonfire. Or anything else. Not if Destiny was his girlfriend. Instead of answering the question, Brandon asked, “What makes you ask that?” The other boys at the table perked up, all suddenly interested in the conversation between Brandon and Philip.

Philip shrugged his shoulders. “My older brother has a girlfriend, and he looks at her the way you look at Miss Rogers.”

Brandon looked at the young boy’s sincere demeanor and wasn’t sure to laugh or to divert his question in a non-obvious way.

“Miss Rogers and I have been friends for a long time. Actually, we became friends when we were about your age.”

“Oh, so she’s your friend and you have a crush on her?” Dylan, a boy who had mixed African and European heritage and a curly-haired Afro, spoke up, popping a French fry into his mouth.

“I don’t have a crush on her,” Brandon denied automatically. He immediately realized the trap he had fallen into.

“You told us to always tell the truth no matter what, Mr. Matthews,” Hayden, the redhead, said.

“Have you told her you like her?” Philip would make a great police interrogator or lawyer. “I think you should tell her. Miss Rogers has a pretty smile.” Philip continued. Destiny did have a gorgeous smile.

“I think she has a pretty smile too but I need you all to finish your food so we can go for this bonfire.” Brandon jumped up and escaped his little band of interrogators and headed toward the large kitchen that was connected with the dining hall. As he walked, his eyes scoped the room. Ray was talking with Destiny and she was smiling. Jealousy stabbed at his heart. He knew the man was her assistant camp director. She said there wasn’t anything going on between them. And based on the sparks that were flying between them last night when he had visited Destiny’s cabin, he knew his feelings for Destiny were not one-sided. But he couldn’t assume anything. Perhaps it was time for him to step things up so Destiny knew exactly where he stood with her, and if she felt the same.

Brandon rinsed his plate and set it in the industrial-sized dishwasher. He turned to find Ray walking toward him.

“Hey, Ray.”

“Hi, Brandon!” If Ray’s parents named him after the rays of the sun, then they nailed it. Brandon had yet to observe Ray not smiling.

“I’ve helped with camps before but this is the first time I got a front seat row of all the daily activities,” Brandon stated, trying to swallow his jealousy from earlier.

“It gives you perspective, right? Thanks for all your help. My
